12 minute sprint write about a non-verbal 12-year-old boy

I was never a twelve year old boy, but I know what it’s like to love one.

Sonny and I have a weekly ritual on laundry day. I pull from pockets rocks and trinkets I used to think of as trash. I place them aside inside a shoebox. After the folding, I put the shoebox on top of the basket and set the destination to my son’s room. I knock before entering. Two stomps signal I can open the door.

His eyes brighten at the sight of the laundry basket. He’s as eager as I am to begin.

I watch as he reaches for the box and pulls out each treasure. Sonny’s silent voice can tell me nothing. Oh, but his face…

It lights up with joy as he recalls the where, the when, and the what of his weekly finds. He explored the field out back, the driveway, the basement. He doesn’t venture far, yet he’s in a world all his own.

On laundry day I get a peek into that world.

Sonny holds a pebble to his chest, pets it like a kitten and spins around. He rubs a stick between his hands over and over dropping it and picking it back up, smiling all the while.Sonny climbs on his bed with the box, returning each item, closing the lid then opening it to begin again. He brings home magical bits of Earth for me.

I secretly wish to hide away in a small corner of his mind, if only to sneak an experience with each act of joyous discovery. I put his clothes away, and watch.

It is an instrument of inspiration to look deeper at the meaning behind the mundane. A ritual I am grateful for, a blessing from God, by way of my son.

At Woodeath Puplic Library...Sat 11.15.25

After a hard couple of months, I did not CANCEL the event, though I toyed with the idea. But I love to hear from readers and talk books. I sold every Copy I had of both KC Story Vol 1 and Vol 2. Sold a couple of Angels and one InspiredD. But what was best was seeing other authors and readers out in the real world. I also got a few people to sign up for the newsletter and I still have candy left!

I occasionally enter contests for two reasons. One, I can claim to be an award winning author if I place, and Two it keeps me editing work that I have often forgotten. As a writer we need to keep producing content. Not just any content, but words that reach readers hearts. The only way we know if it works is to put ourselves out there for all the world to see.

I hope my words touch my readers and my intent to share my stories help people relate to others different than themselves. Love and caring is behind everything I write. We all need to be aware of others and only with kindness can we ever truly understand what someone else sees through their eyes, heart and actions.

Recently I have reached out to understand others different than me. I found that we all want the same thing to be heard, and seen. Weather it be aging parents, those who love differently than I do, or anecdotes of life it is always nice to relate to others. Are you having issues in your family? Are you feeling isolated? Read a book, reach out to an author and let them know they reached you. It does make a difference. You can make a difference. Thanks for reading, Di

I told myself I would update this more often, my bad.

Here's what We did on date night last week... We made wool flowers. Was fun, different and quality time. Patti even may get to help with some resin projects in the future. Next date night is scheduled to go see Snow White!

Also a short story I did when prompted to write about a non-verbal 12 year old boy...for only 12 minutes... we did it long handed in a notebook then I fixed it up a bit before posting it. I was very proud of this so wanted to share it with the faithful....

Can you believe we are in the year 2025? Patti and I went to a painting class with some fellow writers here are the results:

So far In January, I got that terrible bug that was going around….coughing way more than normal. My chiropractor said two of my ribs were out….ouch! I will try and keep you my dedicated followers updated on any writing news. Not sure what 2025 will bring. How about you?

Fall into myself

The year is finally getting to FALL. A season full of cozy blankets, hot drinks and time to read, I hope. This year I am excited to get back to work on my writing and enjoy some good reads. Have you ever been reading a book and don't want to stop? Yet, if you finish it, it will be over and you don't want that either. I am at that point in reading Michelle Greys Buried Truths Facinating subject matter- great writing and emotion pulling at me as I near the end.

Authors I've met

GenreCon was good. This writers confrence had lots this year, but not as many attendees as pervious ones. The Picture is the featured Authors. From Left to Right- Janna MacGregor, Cathy Maxwell, Shawntelle Madison, - Sierra Simone. The panel told us their writing process, their favorite authors and the very first book they read in the romance genre. The best part...they shared personal stories about spouses and how in everyday life they were put into situations never imagined. Will not spill the beans here, but fun was had.

With Brigerton Sieries on NetFlix-being all the rage since lockdown- A special perk was the Interview with Julia Quinn. She was delightful. So down to earth and very entertaining. Julia worked with Shonda Rhimes, creator of GreysAtatomy, Scandal, How to get away with Murder, etc on the latest book Queen Charlotte, my all time favorite in the Bridgerton series.

At The confrence we learned about distancing words, putting more emotion into our writing and structuring of beats in a novel. If you follow me on facebook you may have seen the picture I colored with KAthy Maxwell at the opening gathering. That's how the week in August 2024 went.

What's up?

June was a busy month for me.... Went to conference, on Vacation, work hell and long story short, life happened. Today I am struggling with several things. One: getting old. Need to sign up w SS dept for Medicare A&B so there's that. And I want to take a walk before the sun gets too high, trying to get in more steps daily even got a new phone that counts steps. I also have started a new weight management program this year and have only gone down 5 lbs, so I need to increase my movability. It sucks to age. But I keep hearing my grandmothers voice. "I still feel like I'm only 18 in my mind," she told me. She was 77 when she shared that with me.

Two: I attended that confrence, where I did win FIRST PLACE in a contest. Substack is where I do my monthly newsletters. The writing part of life has stagnated after vacation, as I am so distracted with getting back into real life again. My partners Birthday, our Anniversary and getting improvements scheduled at our home.

I wanted to check in with all my Red Hatter friends, Family, Fans and those curious enough to want to know and click on my website. Don't you just hate it when you research someone and their latest blog was 2-3 years ago?

Almost.

Spring is coming it’s almost here.

The picture is from last year. I am so excited so see what this year brings.

I have plans to plant elephant ears around the statue of Mr.Peaches in my back yard. I don’t profess to have a green anything, much less a green thumb. The lambs ear I planted two years ago is still coming back so that’s good. I will give it my best try.

Which brings to mind. You never fail as long as you keep trying. I can only fail if I quit.

And that goes for writing, style, even yard work.

New on my KIA

I have had a busy month. Febuary has been crazy, but I did get to spend time with my mom and dad. Bought a new car. Helped make promotional flyer for MRW. And still plugging away at learning more about FB and INSTA ads.... (facebook and Instagram). I got back to working on Gayton Place today, and am feeling more like myself.

Isn't the Feather that turns into butterflies cool? Makes me think of words that fly from my heart to the page.

Learning lots, struggling with advertising and bought a few promotion tools. Testing the list again, as it isn’t updating when I manually enter new emails in.
